    Halloween

The frightful fun of Halloween & trick or treating make this holiday among most children's favorite celebrations. It is also considered one of the most dangerous nights of the year for children, especially if they suffer from food allergies &/or sensitivities. This frightening statistic is enough to spook the most calm & collective parent(s). But, there are many things that you can do to help reduce the dangers associated with this holiday.

    School Parties

Prepare to contact your child's school weeks in advance and discuss any planned events. Use this opportunity to review your child's emergency management plan with his/her teacher. If your schedule permits, request to be the room parent for the party. This will allow you to help oversee the event, while allowing your child to safely participate. At minimum, offer suggestions for safe activities that do not involve food (see links) and attempt to provide at least one of the treat items. For example, a safe punch and/or gelatin dessert are easy to prepare and inexpensive. They also can be tailored to meet most dietary needs. Providing one of the treats will ensure that your child can share at least of the treat items that are being served with his/her classmates. Requesting that your child is served first will prevent an accidental cross contamination. It is also wise to reserve a small container of the treat, in the event your child's treat is dropped or contacts unsafe surface.

Here are some festive, non-food Halloween Oriented Activities to do at home or in class:

  • Trick Or Treating

The concept of trick or treating can be a confusing one for children. Parents forbid their children from accepting treats or talking to strangers 364 days of the year. Then, one day a year, most parents find it acceptable for their children to receive treats from individuals that they do not know. This conflicting message can be even more difficult & dangerous for those with dietary restrictions. Establishing rules, including accepting food items from family & friends, & discussing them thoroughly with your child is important for his/her safety. Thorough preparation reduces risks, but does not eliminate them. Even if you remind your chilld not to consume unchecked foods, he/she may be intrigued by fancy packaging or persuaded by peer pressure into trying a questionable item. Regardless of how mature your child appears, she is still a child & is much more likely to take a chance than an adult. Therefore, it is important to be prepared to handle any emergencies promptly and efficiently.

General Trick Or Treating Safety Tips

    Before Halloween night:

    • Check your local newspaper, community, or law enforcement agency for your scheduled neighborhood trick or treating times.
    • Locate a flashlight with fresh batteries, so that your child will have a reliable source of light during their adventure.
    • Establish the route that your child will follow.
    • Attach reflective tape, a chemical light or other glow in the dark jewelry &/or clip light to your child's costume to make them more visible.
    • Make sure your child's costume, including shoes, properly fit to avoid tripping or falling. And, avoid masks or head dresses that may obstruct your child' vision.
    • Do not allow children to carry any sharp objects or props(i.e. utilize toy swords or knifes that are flexible or blunt)
    • At least 24 hours in advance, patch test any cosmetic product that your child will be wearing.
    • If you are not traveling with your child, provide the designee with a list of rules, including not entering stranger's houses, not getting into vehicles with someone that you do not know, not consuming any treats until checked by an adult, etc
    • If your child will be trick or treating without a parent or trusted adult, & does not have a medical alert bracelet, attach a tag inside of your child's costume with pertinent contact information and any medical conditions or allergies. Provide the child with a watch (with a back light), a cellular phone or two way radio (establish the channel settings and test them in your area before the event), coins for phone calls, a map of the area that they will beallowed to visit, instructions on how to handle any emergencies, & a strict curfew.
    • Remind children that jack o lanterns can & often do contain burning candles.

    Halloween Night:
    • Remind children that jack o lanterns can & often do contain burning candles
    • Review all the established rules.
    • Visit only homes that are well lit & do not forget your flashlight.
    • Be aware of your surroundings & watch for objects in your path that could trip or injure you or your child.
    • Do not approach dogs or other unfamiliar pets.
    • Consider carrying a personal alarm (that omits a high pitch shriek) or mace (for older children or adults) to thwart offenders.
    • Walk, do not run, & only cross streets at established crosswalks or crossing zones . Motorists often can not see you, especially small children, even though you can see them .
    • Follow established paths, sidewalks, etc. & obey all traffic signals and signs. If there is not a sidewalk present, remember to walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
    • Remember, you can dial 9-1-1 from any phone, including cell phones, free of charge.
    • Travel in groups, preferably with an adult for supervision.

Trick Or Treating Tips For Food Allergic/Sensitive

    Before Halloween night:

    • Check all food products that are packaged in different sizes & for special times of the year. For example, holiday candies & food, may not always be processed or packaged at the same place or with the same ingredients and/or equipment as their other counterparts.
    • Remember, bulk or binned food or candies, e.g. those stored in buckets or bags , may become cross contaminated in handling or scoops used with other "unsafe" candies . Pre packed options are safer.
    • Confirm sources of materials in your child's costume, make-up, jewelry, etc. Face paint, costumes, decorations & costume jewelry are all potential sources of allergens, including latex & nickel. Also, note that holiday costume fabric often is dyed with cheaper grade dyes, since costumes are only worn a few times, & therefore may be more likely to irritate sensitive skin. If possible, allow your children to briefly wear the garment to reduce the possibility of confusing an allergic reaction the garment with one from a food residue.
    • Provide safe treats for trusted friends & neighbors to distribute to your allergic child. Place items in a tightly sealed plastic zippered bag. Clearly mark the bag with your child's name, type of costume & any other additional information. This will reduce the risk of your child's treats becoming mixed up or lost. The zippered bag will also act as a barrier, & help prevent cross-contamination with other allergenic items.
    • Consider alternative items for treats. Stickers, books, crayons, small toys & stencils are just a few suggestions. www.orientaltradingcompany.com offers a multitude of small toys and holiday themed merchandise at a reasonable price. Snack size bags of safe pretzels, potato chips, maple sugar candy or raisins also may be suitable substitutes. As always, remember to confirm any item that you purchase is free of hidden allergens.
    • Contact your child's school or daycare center & request to be involved in party planning or as a helper when the party takes place. Many well- meaning parents can inadvertently serve your child the wrong food, especially if you are not present.
    • Review emergency procedures with your child's school, or day care facility. Halloween food-related crafts & parties are likely times when reactions can occur.
    • Check your child's medicine bag prior to going trick or treating. Verify product expiration dates are current and make certain the bag is well stocked. Even if your child will not be sampling any treats, other children will most likely be sampling theirs. Chocolate-covered fingers of a trick-or-treating neighbor could inadvertently result in an exposure for your child.
    • Consider the fact that your child may not be easily recognized when attired in his or her Halloween costume. A nametag might be appropriate for a young child.

      Halloween night:
      • During Halloween children are often presented with a bucket of candies to select their treats. This could cause potential cross contamination on the surface of the packaging from other children 's hands or inadvertent remains of a consumed item to which your child is allergic or intolerant to.
      • Accompany your child on his or her trick or treating adventure. This will allow you to constantly monitor the treats your child receives, and enable you to immediately respond to any allergic reaction.
      • Double check all treats prior to allowing your child to consume them. If uncertain about an item, have a stock pile of safe treats that your child enjoys on hand, & exchange the goodies for a safe item. For older children, take them to the store beforehand, and allow them to choose a bag or two of safe candy that you can use to "trade" for the unsafe candy brought home after trick-or-treating. For younger children, you can engage their imagination by having them leave their unsafe candy for the "Pumpkin Fairy" or "The Great Pumpkin," who will come during the night and replace their candy with safe treats or toys.
      • Don't forget to take along all of your child's medications & hand wipes. Verify beforehand that they are up to date.

        Alternatives to trick or treating:
        • Host a Halloween party. Only serve items that are safe for your child.
        • Allow your child to dress up in her costume and take him/her out to dinner at a safe restaurant. Don't forget to bring along a few safe treats. Many restaurants hand out candy for Halloween.
        • Locate an age-appropriate haunted house or pumpkin patch & visit it on Halloween night.
        • Check with local malls to see if they are offering trick or treating.
        • Create your own haunted house and at-home Halloween celebration.
